Parbold and District Ramblers

Sizergh Castle Walk 11th August 2024

DIRECTIONS (from Parbold) 55 miles approx 50 minutes - 60 minutes

SAT NAV LA8 8DZ

Start 9am from Parbold shops make your way to Junction 27 M6

At the roundabout, take the 1st exit for M6 & travel                                                    47.8 mi

Take the Junction 36 slip road on the left for A590                                                       0.2 mi

Keep left, heading towards Barrow / Kendal                                                                  3.3 mi

Take the slip road on the left for A6 / A590 and head towards Barrow / Lake District Peninsulas / Milnthorpe                                                                                                                                                                    0.2 mi

At the roundabout, take the 1st exit for A590 towards Barrow / Grange / Lake District Peninsulas / Levens / Milnthorpe / Newby Bridge                                                                                                                  0.2 mi

Take the slip road on the right for road                                                                            43 ft

Keep straight to get onto road                                                                                         0.3 mi

Arrive at destination Sizergh Castle And Garden

 

The Walk approx 6 - 6.5 miles undulating possibly muddy dependant on previous day’s weather, facilities at the National Trust Cafe Sizergh

 

Once arrive at Sizergh park on the free to members National Trust car park, we have two cards so someone can use one card, (there is free parking on the road leading to Sizergh Castle entrance)

Car Park Fees 4 hours £7.50, All Day £9.00 car share advisable to reduce costs

 

We will begin the walk between 10 & 10.30am, heading south out of the National Trust car park, working our way uphill veering south west to Sizergh Fell where we can admire the views and a coffee break

 

From here the walk undulates north eastward towards the parish church St John Helsington where a light lunch (Strickland Arms meal walkers) or a heavier lunch (non Strickland Arms walkers)

Retracing our steps for 400 yards eastwards, we then head down a steep hill crossing farming land, then south to Park End Moss wildlife reserve, another coffee break

Back from where we came to the junction of Park End Moss, farm Land & Sizergh castle grounds we will work our way slowly north eastwards gaining height crossing a minor road following the trail back to Sizergh Castle.

 

There may be some free time (national trust shop, cafe, castle ground) before a booked meal at the Strickland Arms just outside the grounds

 

Anybody who wishes to have a meal after the walk please let myself or Carole know so we can confirm numbers with the Strickland Arms.
